Joy is not made to be a crumb!

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate.

Give in to it.

There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be.

We are not wise, and not very often kind.

And much can never be redeemed.

Still, life has some possibility left.

Perhaps this is its way of fighting back,

that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world.

It could be anything,

but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins.

Anyway, that’s often the case.

Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty.

Joy is not made to be a crumb.

~ Mary Oliver

Let’s start a movement of giving into joy this week!

I’ve been thinking about the poem above that my friend posted on his Instagram this week. My word for the year 2022 is JOY. I have a reminder set on my phone every evening that asks me, “Did you seek joy today?” Sometimes when it pops up, a joyful moment of the day comes immediately to mind. Other days, it’s hard to remember if I felt true joy that day at all. On those days, as I put my kids to bed, I ask them, like I always do, “What was the best thing that happened to you today?” I love to hear their responses. Listening to what brings joy to small children is often such a reminder that we can find joy in small things. An ice cream cone. A jump off of a diving board. A scooter ride around the block. A dance party in the living room.

Giving into small moments of joy does not mean that all moments or all days will be joyful. Certainly, there are many days for all of us that are tough. Our yoga practice asks us to sit with what we’re feeling without judgement. To just be present in the moment we’re in. How often do we skip through a joyful moment, as if we don’t deserve to experience joy right alongside heartache?

On the mat this week, we’ll play around with smiling in our poses, have a playful practice, and find joy in our yoga practice. Off the mat, I hope you’ll join me in asking yourself, “Did I seek joy today?”

Affirmations for the week:

(Choose the one(s) that speak to you!

My life is blessed with joy!

I live for joy!

I am joy!

My days are filled with joy!

I prioritize and seek joy everyday!
